RE: OBX CELL PHONE SERVICE

Two years ago we had Nextel. We would lose service before we got to Rodanthe. No Nextel south. We changed over to Verizon and have service everywhere including on Ocracoke. Usually we have a full signal. I know there are some others that do work, I don't remember which ones.

RE: Gonna attempt to build bike rack for truck this weekend!

Pat and Karen, The only problem I see with your set up is that you cannot open the tailgate with the bikes loaded. I an Staysassy's husband. You could easily fix yor issue of not being able to open the gate with a simple 2X8 across the bed rails directly in front of the tailgate. This will allow up to access your truck bed with the bikes loaded and your tool box. The is a nice looking setup, but it does look heavy and cumbersome. You are correct the tailgate can not be used with the bikes. I have to make sure all of the big stuff is loaded before the bikes. I really wanted access to the tool box. The next mod will be something in the back so the tailgate can work with the bikes loaded. Just need to find time. It is somewhat heavy and cumbersome. The 3/4 ply and the 2x4 framing may have been overkill. I am still able to get it on and off the truck by my self. DW and DD have helped when they are not doing something else. I become impatient while waiting for them and just go it myself. Thanks for the comments, Pat

RE: Gonna attempt to build bike rack for truck this weekend!

Here is mine. As you can see, I also have a short bed and a tool box. I mounted the bike rack on a piece of 3/4" ply that sits on the bedrails. This allows me access to the tool box and use the bed for storage. http://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z213/patstakem/camping%20and%20travel%20trailer/Mods/IMG_0531.jpg http://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z213/patstakem/camping%20and%20travel%20trailer/Mods/IMG_0530.jpg http://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z213/patstakem/camping%20and%20travel%20trailer/Mods/IMG_0532.jpg

RE: Maybe going to the OBX, NC

Never stayed there but we drove through it last year. It looked pretty nice. The sound front sites are sandy. Might be a little tough with a big trailer or rig. Great view of the sound. Sunsets will be great. The camp store looked well stocked. The Outer Banks is a great place for vacation. We are going to be staying further south at Hatteras Sands in the village of Hatteras. There are plenty of CG's in the banks. Have a great time. Pat

RE: East Coast Beach CG's

We second Camp Hatters. In August we are staying at Hatteras Sands in the Village of Hatters which about 30-40 minutes south of Camp Hatteras. The Outer Banks rule.

RE: Jiffy Lube Jerks Just Changed My Oil

When we lived in an apartment, I used to take it to the dealer or a Jiff Lube. When we moved into a house and I had the space, I did the oil changes myself. I tried the local Jiffy Lube and got tired of the "up selling" they did. When the tech would enter the waiting room, you knew he was going to try and sell you something. I would tell him no before he would open his mouth. The last straw was when the invoice showed there were sealed grease fittings.(there are at least 10 zerks on my old truck) I had them take it back in and grease it. Back to doing it myself and probably will as long as I can physically crawl under the truck.

RE: Where do you put your hitch when you've set up?

If we are not leaving the camp ground, then it stays on the truck. If we do day trips or we are in one place for more then a weekend, then I usually take it off and store it in the front compartment. Both options are not very secure but I haven't had a problem yet. Hope it stays that way.

RE: Is there a trick to removing plastic hub covers

I took a metal coat hanger and bent it into a hook. Place the hook part into the slot and gently pull. It should come off easily. This was easier for me then using a screwdriver. I am sure someone makes an expensive specialized tool just for removing hubcovers.

RE: Oil Change Myth?

I have always followed the owners manual for my gassers. My Dodge is the first diesel I have owned. I send out a sample of the oil to be analyzed when I change the oil. They check for the additives as well as things that would indicate bad things. They keep telling me to extend the intervals every time. I am up to 8500 miles between changes. There is no way I would change the oil every 3000 miles with the diesel. 3 gals of oil is not cheep.

RE: Are Jaycos' Good Trailers?

Jayco is the only brand we have had. This will be our second season and so far nothing major. The Microwave stopped working. Not a big deal. We only use to reheat things. It is called camping anyway. They replaced it with no problems. From what we have experienced and what others have stated on here, Jayco makes a pretty good unit and their customer service is excellent. Congrates on the new rig and enjoy. Pat

RE: How often do you check lug nut tightness?

I check before every trip. I marked the lug nuts to see if there is any movement. Makes checking the wheels that much easier. Also the tire pressure on the trailer and the TV is checked before every trip. Always have the torque wrench and a air gauge in the truck.

RE: Washing your rig before a trip??

Sometimes before a trip. Most times after we return. If there is alot of road dirt and bugs, then it gets a bath before it gets covered up. If it is not to bad, I may let it wait until next time.

RE: Summer Vacation!!!!!! - Where are you going?

In August we are going for just over two weeks. We start in Williamsburg (American Heritage CG,3 days) then off to Hatteras North Carolina (Hatteras Sands CG, 7 days) Home for one day and then finish up in Lancaster, PA (Gettysburg Farm CG, 4 days). We put money into the "Feed The Best" fund so we don't have to worry about the fuel cost. A little every week and it adds up quick. Can't wait to leave.

RE: Yogi Bear Quarryville, PA

I think yours might be just a little for big for the driveway. If you leave the toys maybe we can work something out. Of course then I would have to trade in the TT for a Toy Hauler, then more toys, it would never stop. I would end up having to sell the pool to buy more toys. Sweet rig!!

RE: Yogi Bear Quarryville, PA

Thanks for all of the posts. My wife and I decided just to cancel. She called to ask about the water park and they were "hoping" it would be open by next weekend. They could not give her an exact answer. The woman on the phone could not even state if they would discount the fees or refund any money. The pool was not even going to be open. For the money they are charging, we just said never mind. I can camp in the driveway and use my own pool if I want. Again thanks to everyone who replied. It helped.

RE: Yogi Bear Quarryville, PA

Thanks for all the replies. We are going to decide very shortly to bg the plans to go. Along with the high cost, the water park not being complete and some obligations that have come up. If the waterpark is not there, there really is no reason to go up. I really hate to cancel a camping trip but it just may not be worth. Jacdanboy - Thanks for making the effort. It definately will help. The rates are the highest that we have paid but thought it would be worth it to check out the new water park. TTYL

RE: Campgrounds near Gettysburg

We have stayed at Gettysburg KOA, Gettysburg CG and Artilary Ridge. All were really nice places to stay. The KOA has alot of trees. That might be an advantage in August. Gettysburg CG is right on a creek which is really nice. Also has plenty of shaded sites. Artillary Ridge has tours on Horse back of the battlefields. That was alot of fun. You do not have to stay at the CG to take the tours, but you do have to make reservations. If you have your own horse, they even have stables you can rent. The KOA and Gettysburg have nice cabins from what I could see. I did not pay attention if Artillary Ridge had cabins or not. I think they have a few by the stables. Good luck in your search.
